To Restore or Replace?

That is the question, when it comes to your wooden floors.

If you are unsure, then we can help. As well as specialising in many types of new floors, including hardwood and engineered wood, our team are experts in refinishing old wood floors. If you don’t know whether your current wooden floor is beyond restoration or if it could be given a new lease of life, then just ask for one of our team to come out and assess you floor. We can then let you know what options are available to you.

There are lots of things that we will consider when making our assessment and we can run through these with you here to help you understand the possibilities. These include the current condition of your floor, your budget, the look that you are aiming to achieve, and the age of your floor.

Refinishing a floor can be the perfect solution for some people whilst a new floor will suit others better. The process of refinishing a floor will put a room out of action for a period of time, whilst the wood is sanded back, any necessary repairs are made, and then stain and/or lacquer is applied. This will bring back the original shine of your floor and breathe new life into it, whilst retaining the characteristic features of your aged floor.

Sometimes when we inspect a floor, unfortunately the costs of repairs can be prohibitive if there is a lot of restoration to be done and sometimes structurally a new floor is necessary, but very often restoration is a great option for that beautiful wooden floor that you have found hidden under years of carpet and underlay. The carpet will have provided great protection for your floor over the years.

If budget is a key factor in your decision making, then sanding and restoring the surface of your current floor may well be the best option for you. It is much more cost-effective than replacing a hardwood floor (even if a cheaper material is chosen), because you will only be paying for the time of the technician and the staining/lacquering products required.

But maybe you are just looking for something completely new and different? Laying a new floor offers the opportunity to significantly change the colour of the flooring, to choose a new laying pattern and to introduce technologically more advanced materials.

Remember that hardwood floors, whether new or refurbished, are great for allergy sufferers and are easy to keep clean.
